Leadership  Illawarra Program Visit to Canberra

21 & 22 June 2017

The Leadership Illawarra Program participants spent two days in Canberra learning about leadership from our political leaders during June 21-22.

 Questions were posed around:
  • What is leadership?
  • Can leadership be taught or only learnt?
  • What are the characteristics of a good leader?
The group heard from inspiring leaders including Dr Brendan Nelson AO, Dr Allan Hawke AC, the Hon Fiona Nash, the Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, the Hon Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones.  Visits were centred in and around Parliament House, as well as a tour of the War Memorial.

Some of the key take-outs included:
  • ‘If you get the people right, the rest falls into place’
  • ‘Experience shapes leaders’
  • ‘Leadership can be learnt, but can’t be taught’
  • ‘The role of a leader is to provide the shape, shared vision and values that give meaning to the work of others’
  • ‘Leaders make the difficult decisions to do what is right’
  • ‘Leadership takes resilience and perseverance’
  • ‘Leadership is sometimes what you do when you don’t know what to do’
  • ‘As a leader, you will be required to step out of your comfort zone’

MentorMe Launch Event - Speed Networking

Picture

10 May 2017

Leadership Illawarra Program participants took part last night in the MentorMe launch with a Mentoring Speed Networking event. Participants had the opportunity to meet with seasoned local leaders who are willing to serve as mentors in the program.

An introductory presentation was given covering the following topics:
  • the purpose of mentoring,
  • the roles of mentors and mentees, and
  • tips for developing goals.
This was then followed by speed networking, where participants were given 90 seconds per mentor to meet and assess their suitability for a successful mentor/mentee relationship.
Mentees were then given the opportunity to indicate their preferred mentors.

The highly successful MentorMe program was developed and run by JCI Illawarra. It is a structured one-on-one mentoring program which establishes links between younger and more experienced professionals in the Illawarrra.  MentorMe provides guidance regarding mentees career journey and fosters opportunities for individual growth.
