The 2016-2018 participants are the third for the Leadership Illawarra Program.
Each theme commences with a one-day master class, followed by visits to some of the region’s leading businesses, each designed to build on issues and topics covered in the master class.
Themes 2 and 3 have an optional assessment task/project on which two subject credits can be awarded towards a degree program at Sydney Business School.

1. CHALLENGES FOR THE ILLAWARRA
There are many current and future challenges for the Illawarra. Some will be addressed not only during the Master Class, but also throughout visits, tours and workshops during the initial six months of the Leadership Illawarra Program.
There are several key challenges to be addressed in Theme 1: • Infrastructure and Transport • Economic Development • Declining Industry Base • Industry Resilience and Diversity • Opportunities for Growth and Innovation • Social Support and Caring for our Residents • Creating Greater Employment Opportunities At the completion of this theme it is expected that participants would have an overview of: • NSW Department of Planning & Infrastructure challenges that are facing the region. • Regional innovation. • The development of strategic infrastructure assets. • Future industry, SMEs and entrepreneurship growth. • How to make Wollongong a truly regional capital. |
2. GOVERNANCE AND ETHICS*
The Governance and Ethics Theme will dissect not only public office governance but also corporate governance as it relates to organisational policies, guidance, processes and decision-rights.
Key Topics within Governance and Ethics include:
• Corporate Governance
• Business Ethics and Integrity
• Local Government and Public Office
• Government Affairs
• Law and Order.
At the completion of this theme it is expected that participants would be able to identify:
• Key concepts associated with corporate governance and public policy, particularly as the latter relates to the regulation of business activities.
• Different approaches to corporate governance that have shaped governance debates in Australia and internationally.
• The role of government recommended by these approaches.
• Key stakeholders in the governance debate, and explain how and why they seek to shape that debate and its outcomes.
• The role or impact that ethics have on corporate governance.
• How the policy and regulatory environment affects the effectiveness of corporate governance.

The Leadership Theme will engage the emerging leader in new and exciting ways to lead personally and organisationally.
Key Topics within Leadership include: • Managing and Leading People • Media, Politics and Protocol • Organisational Culture • Emotional Intelligence • Business Coaching At the completion of this theme it is expected that participants would have gained an understanding of: • A leader’s expectation in the media, media protocol and training. • Experience with politicians and political protocols in business. • Different perspectives and practices used to manage people in organisations. • How external factors and business criteria influence strategic decisions relating to the way organisations manage their people. • Strategic policy options available to managers in terms of structure, motivation, leadership and the culture of the organisation. • Ethical issues involved in managing people and the value and challenge of managing diversity. • Coaching and mentoring in leadership. |
4. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT/SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Community Engagement/Social Responsibility Theme will not only look at how the emerging leader can more actively engage with their community but also highlight organisations that are working in this area currently and encourage open dialogue about the issues, challenges and successes that come from being dynamically engaged with the people of our region.
